Analytics

Business Intelligence (BI) is the process of converting raw data from a single or multiple source systems such as ERP, CRM, Excel, CSV, XML etc. into meaningful and useful information which can be used for business analysis across various levels of an enterprise. BI technologies can handle huge and disparate data covering both structured as well as unstructured to help identify, develop and create new strategic business opportunities. In absence of BI, this large set of disparate data in isolation may fail to throw out any useful patterns. In today’s world where businesses are so competitive, multi-faceted and diverse, it is thus imperative that you have a business intelligence system in place so that you can analyze your past to build your future.

Business Intelligence can support a wide range of business decisions right from operational to strategic. For example, at an operational level, a supply chain manager may want to optimize the inventory or a sales manager may like to track the target vs. achievement of his/her team. At a strategic level, the CEO or CFO may be interested in defining the priorities and goals by identifying the most profitable customers & products. There are thousands of use-cases of BI for both operational & strategic levels.

At Polestar, we have end-to-end service offerings for all the aspects of BI i.e.

Data Warehouse

Datawarehouse is a central repository of integrated data from one or more disparate sources. Datawarehouse stores current as well as historical data. The first step towards creating a great datawarehouse is to understand the enterprise data residing in various systems & the relationship between the same. This requires sound understanding of the business processes and the mapping of the same with the transactional systems.

Data Mining & Predictive analysis

This basically refers to an automatic or semi-automatic analysis of large data sets to identification patterns such as clusters, anomalies, association, classification, regression or summarization. Based on data mining, you can extrapolate the patterns to predict the future with reasonable degree of confidence. At Polestar, we use R as the platform of choice for predictive analytics.

Reporting

A very common scenes in all organizations is people running helter skelter to gather and validate data to create reports for the management. People who have been hired to formulate strategies or to validate strategies, wasting their time in the mundane spreadsheet work. Just imagine, how productive the workplace would become if all these reports could be generated automatically without any manual intervention. How cool it would be if there is a system which can push the right report to the right person with the right data at the right time without the person needing to ask for it. This is what the reporting module of a Business Intelligence application can do for you. You can view reports online or get them in your mailbox. You can slice and dice or filter them out or even export them in any format that you want. The CEO doesn’t have to shout on phone, the CFO doesn’t have to chase over emails and the team doesn’t have to burn the mid-night oil.

Dashboards

Even though reports are integral to business and as they say “Devil lies in the details”. But senior management more often than not would be interested in seeing visual indicators to see what is not going right where his/her involvement or immediate attention may be required. They cannot and should not be tracking anything and everything happening in the company. Rather they would focus on a handful of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in a pictorial representation which can in a glance tell them where they need to take corrective actions. This is what a dashboard does. Well-made dashboards ensure that the management gets to the root of a problem fast & focusses on fixing it rather than going in loops to identify the problem itself. An organization without proper management dashboards is the same as a car without the dashboard.

Scenario analysis

You’re into a management review meeting presenting the latest month’s MIS. Somebody asks, what impact would it have on our bottom line if we reduce our cost by so and so percentage points. High chance, it would fall into ‘I-WILL-GET-BACK-TO-YOU’ scenario. This is where a scenario analysis could have helped you. Scenario analysis is powerful simulator which can generate the complete downstream impact. Before taking a decision, you can run this simulator to see what impact would it

have on your organizational numbers. Scenario analysis is also called “What-If” analysis.
