Airport Concessionaire optimizes Data Management with QlikViewRishabh Rai
Our client is India’s Largest Airport Concessionaire. They strive to provide world-class infrastructure & facilities. To meet the customer’s requirements more effectively, they did a complete overhaul of their legacy data management and reporting systems with the analytics capabilities of QlikView – a leading analytics solution.
The business was recording a massive amount of internally produced data. The array of Non-aero functions was adding 30,000 rows daily to a spreadsheet that already had 60 Million rows.
Data sources: EPOS & Non-EPOS from airport terminal stores, Car parking and Duty-free section.
This dexterity of data was accompanied by the non-uniformity prevalent across these data sources which were creating multiple versions of the same spreadsheet. The data sanctity was severely damaged.
It was a time-consuming process to use spreadsheets for data analysis & reporting. It was impeding the ability to find patterns in the data and getting timely & actionable insights critical to business decision making. Adding to that mix, the varying information required by the business and the need to show complex data.
There would soon more than a billion rows of data. To process this data and to complete the project at a minimum cost, they realized an analytical solution was the need of the hour.
So, they procured QlikView 11 Enterprise Edition.
The QlikView implementation was completed and it was the time to reap the benefits. The system optimized the operations the data sources got integrated.
Business users were able to see some dashboards and insights, but it solved their problems to a very limited extent.
After all the efforts put in by departments to support the implementation, it was not paying off. The implemented solution was characterized by the following problems:
- Long Processing Time: They required a near-real-time solution to take a better decision, but still each data reloads used to take 9.5 hours which was again not addressing the existing challenges. Even each click on the solution platform was taking 3-4 minutes of refresh time.
- Lost Faith & Low Adoption: Since it was not addressing any challenges business users lost faith in the solution. This led to an even more chaotic process and hence, low user adoption. The tool was not delivering the value that was promised and it lost its reputation and trust factor.
The question raised was “What’s the ROI?”. The technical team doesn’t have anything concrete to support the delivered solution. The tool failed to present Accurate & Timely insights to business users.
Before scrapping QlikView implementation, the IT Team reached-out to Qlik one final time, that’s when Qlik India asked us to run a diagnostic. We ended up reviving the whole implementation with the strong support of the IT Team.
Reviving the Implementation:
We believe, delivering world-class services demand a constant view of the business and addressing the pain points at the earliest. The processes should be streamlined for timely & accurate insights.
Our analysts worked closely with the IT Team and business users to identify what were their concerns with the existing solution. Hence, to deliver the results, our developers worked tirelessly and re-document the user’s missing requirements.
Our implementation revolves around the Qlik’s three-layered ETL architecture even though it takes some. But essentially it leads to highly optimized processes and lays down a robust base to implement an all-encompassing analytical solution.
And then we finally recreated the UI as per users’ regular interaction with the system which helped us deliver precise a solution.
“The RAM optimization had reduced the reload time to 36 minutes (from 9.5 hours) and per click time to 4 seconds (from 3-4 minutes).”
Fine-tuning the performance reduced the RAM usage & reload-time by approximately 90%. The per-click time was optimized for up to 98%. This enabled near real-time information to users anytime and anywhere which in-turn improved the business user’s performance. These factors helped in significantly reducing the turn-around time for the delivered system.
Manual report creation was replaced by auto-generated reports with loaded analytics and dashboards precisely hitting the nail on its head. Now the reports were literally just a click away.
QlikView adoption helped restore the Data sanctity which was the key to realizing the actual value of an analytics implementation. People equipped with knowledge and insight were able to make faster decisions with utmost confidence in the data they have based them upon.
For our extra-ordinary implementation effort and extensive support – Polestar was awarded the Best vendor by the group.
The QlikView implementation provided has been so effective that they are contemplating to extend it to other functions like Aero, Cargo, SPG & Operations as well.
